Pool Closed for 2011

by on Oct.22, 2011, under Pool News

Unfortunately we had to end the Summer pool season on August 30th, a little earlier than planned.  Due to the water condition, and good possibility of a rainy weekend – we decided to shut down the pool and not spend a lot more money on chemicals to clear it up.

We appreciate all the support from past and present members, and those who rent the pool for parties!

We will continue next year with the famous BBQ and Garage Sale fundraiser on the 1st Saturday in June.  Thanks to Gary Flores (GTs Custom Floors) for making the BBQ happen.  If you are doing some fall/winter cleaning and have garage sale items, please contact us so we can pick them up and store them.

May 2011 Annual Meeting Minutes

by on Oct.22, 2011, under Association News

The annual meeting of the membership of Lakewood Civic Association met on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at the Lakewood Church of Christ.

The treasurer’s report was given by Sheryl Ward.  There was no significant change in the bank balance.

New Board members elected by the membership for a 2 year term were announced as Monica Chauviere, JoAnn Eve, Tim Quinton, and Kenneth Tilton.  They join the current board members who are Mary Bagwell, Bobby Bonds, Randy Dickey, and Sheryl Ward.  Members leaving the board were Jim Cauley, Jim Edwards, Manuel Escontrias, and Barbara Gibson.  The association thanked the current, new, and past board members for their service to Lakewood.  At the first board meeting in June, the new officers of the board will be elected.

The status of Lakewood activities and plans was presented by current president, Randy Dickey.  These include:

  1. The construction and landscaping of the new subdivision sign at Post Oak and Bayway.  Members of the association, garden club and other volunteers completed the project.
  2. Work has been initiated to update the LCA website.
  3. Work is ongoing to reduce the boat launch property tax
  4. The board plans to work on more lawn care enforcement

There were 3 guest speakers:

Dawson Mertz and Warren Dalton of San Saba Oil and Gas spoke regarding deep drilling under Lakewood.  San Saba has acquired a lease from the City of Baytown for conventional deep drilling under the neighborhood.  San Saba has offered effected Lakewood residents a higher signing bonus and royalty rate than required by the city.  The drilling would be conventional (not fracking) and directional with the drill site located outside the neighborhood, likely in the Wade Road area.  Association members’ questions were posed and answered.

Officer Stewart Beasley spoke on the topic of crime avoidance.  He discussed the recent home invasion that occurred in Country Club.  He stated that crime in the Lakewood neighborhood is low, and he emphasized that home owners need to continue to monitor the neighborhood and call police whenever suspicious activity is noticed.

Brandon Capetillo, District 3 City Councilman provided an update of activities in the city that influence Lakewood, such as the upcoming repaving of Hackberry Street.

Reports were given by the Garden Club, Boat Club, Lakewood Pool, and Neighborhood Watch.

The floor was opened for discussion.

The meeting was adjourned.
