October 2012 Lakewood Yard of the Month

The Lakewood Garden Club has chosen the home of Joe and Maribel Estrada at 227 Burnet as the October Yard of the Month. Landscaping notables include
lantana, blue plumbago, gold star esperanza, vincas, ornamental grasses, and several varieties of fern. Situated on a corner lot, this yard features a gazebo
with seating and a fireplace.

September 2012 Lakewood Yard of the Month

The Lakewood Garden Club has chosen the home of Sheri Duncan and Randy St Clair at 103 North Burnet Drive  as the September Yard of the Month. This lovely yard features mature trees and many drought-tolerant plants and shrubs. Most notable are the blue plumbego which compliment the color of the house. Accenting these are large leaf philodendrons, small palms, vincas, purple vitex, blue sage, and ornamental grasses.

August 2012 Lakewood Yard of the Month

Lakewood Garden Club has selected the home of Aaron and Kim Featherstone at 110 Honeysuckle as the August Yard of the Month. The yard is characterized by mature trees, azaleas, hanging baskets of fern, hibiscus, vincas, and several shades of knockout roses.

July 2012 Lakewood Yard of the Month

Lakewood Garden Club has selected the home of Tom and Rita Hard at 214 Post Oak as the July Yard of the Month. Large oak trees and an inviting bench near the driveway are accented by beautifully mulched flower beds containing lantana, ixoria, petunias, impatients, periwinkles, and decorative grasses. Large Hawaiian Ti plants in pots line the carport.

June 2012 Lakewood Yard of the Month

The Lakewood Garden Club has selected the home of Jerry and Julie Fallin at 118 North Burnett Drive as the June Yard of the Month. Mature trees grace their yard along with bougainvillea, Hawaiian ti plants, and sculptured shrubs. Sago palms grace the lovely entry.

May 2012 Lakewood Yard of the Month

Lakewood Garden Club is awarding the honor of Yard of the Month for May to James and Charlene Sharp at 144 North Burnett Dr. Their yard features petunias, butterfly iris, and begonias. Hawaiian ti, periwinkles, and foxtail fern grace the entry and a lovely fountain is a centerpiece in the front.

May Gardening Tips

  • Azaleas: Last chance to fertilize and prune.  Water deeply once a week or as needed.
  • Pruning: Spring flowering shrubs may be pruned after blooming.
  • Mulch: Keeping beds well mulched with conserve soil moisture.
  • Annuals Perennials: Plants for summer color include begonia, bulbine, coleus, coneflower, lantana, penta, periwinkle, shrimp plant, torenia, and zinnia.
  • Fertilize: Bearded Iris and Louisiana Iris may be fertilized after blooming.
  • Vegetables: Plant basil, chives, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, and okra.

April 2012 Lakewood Yard of the Month

Lakewood Garden Club has proudly selected the home of Charles and Bobbie Blanchard at 306 Lakewood Drive as the April Yard of the Month. The large corner lot is accented with both young and mature trees, azaleas, variegated ginger, ferns, coleus, and pots of petunias. A lovely archway to the back yard is covered with star jasmine with pots of blooming plants nearby.

April Gardening Tips

  • Azaleas: Prune now if not done previously.
  • Bulbs:  Fertilize with bone meal after blooming.
  • Mulch:  Mulch flowers, shrubs, and trees when planting.
  • Flowers:  Plant flowers for color including Begonia, Cosmos, Periwinkle, Penta, Verbena, and Zinnia.
  • Veggies:  Plant for summer vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumber, beans, and herbs of all kinds.
  • Brighten you doorways with colorful plants in containers
